Gary Lineker And The New Controversial UK Asylum Policy

The New Controversial UK Asylum Policy by Home Secretary Suella Braverman has many of us talking about what is actually going on.  Can we trust our Government? What is Right and what is Wrong? Gary Lineker has openly spoken out about the new Controversial UK asylum Policy

The UK is a member of the Refugee Convention.  We have always stood firm on Human Rights especially those that cause threat to Life – Article 2. Or those rights that breach Article 3 which is preventing torture and degrading treatment.

As the years have passed Asylum has become a political game to some.  Using the numbers and figures to swing votes or show someone in a better light.  The British public do rely on what is said by our Government and the British media as mostly being factual.

But the lines are being blurred and it is difficult to know what is happening on ground level.  The BBC reported that Gary Lineker had to be “spoken to”  because he compared the UK Asylum Policy with 1930’s Germany.

How true is Gary Lineker’s comment?

Firstly, Gary Lineker works for the BBC.  One of their own, causing controversy against the British Government is likely to be met with a slap on the wrist.  Is this not a free country? Do we have the freedom of speech and expression? What are those limits?

Many of us have known Gary Lineker since he was a footballer. Gary Lineker is now the host of Match of the Day.  Gary Lineker tweeted after a video about Ms Suella Braverman UK Asylum Policy.  His words were “Good heavens, this is beyond awful.”  Many of us have said and thought the exact same words.

Gary Lineker in response to a comment to him then said;

 “We take far fewer refugees than other major European countries.”

“This is just an immeasurably cruel policy directed at the most vulnerable people in language that is not dissimilar to that used by Germany in the 30s, and I’m out of order?”

Shadow Home Secretary Yvette Cooper told BBC Radio 4’s said that;

“He’s somebody that’s spoken out very strongly on lots of different issues, and people who feel strongly should be able to speak out and say the things that they feel.”

Gary Lineker does raise important issues here.  For far too long asylum seekers are made to be the villains.   The negative hostility against them has resulted in asylum seekers requiring protection.  For example, we still have Afghan refugees living in hotels more than one year on. Extra security has had to be provided for fears of threats and harm coming to these people.  Asylum seekers who have left the war zone and the Taliban rule finally feel safe and free here in the UK.  They can walk freely without fear and yet there is a need to protect them even in the UK.  Is this not the result of the negative media attention that is given to Asylum seekers?

Next one to watch on Netflix?

Recently, the Neflix film ‘swimmers’ is just about that.  2 young girls who came across on boats, national swimmers.  The viewpoints of many need to change.  These people need help and support not our anger and discrimination.

You have to reach UK soil before our asylum laws allow anyone to claim asylum, however they arrive. There are many rules and requirements to be met before someone is given refugee status in the UK.  The Braverman Asylum Policy that has been proposed is judging a book by its cover.   Asylum seekers should not be judged just by how they travelled to the UK.

As a community and nation will need to listen to each individual Infront of us regardless of their race, colour, religion, gender, sexuality and boat journey.
